Ankara – Morocco, which has implemented major successful reforms in several areas, “has set the standard for the region in terms of democracy”, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Monday in Ankara.

Davutoglu, who was speaking at a joint press briefing with his Moroccan counterpart Saad Dine El Otmani, praised the “crucial” reforms undertaken in Morocco, which earned it recognition and consideration across the world.

Morocco instituted, under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, political, economic and social reforms necessary to meet the aspirations of Moroccans in calm and serenity, the minister said, citing the adoption of a new constitution, the holding of early elections and the formation of a new government led by the party that won the election.

With these changes, which reflect a strategic vision among Moroccan officials, the Kingdom has stood out as a “successful model” in the region, he said.

Davutoglu expressed his country’s readiness to support Morocco, an example of peaceful change.

The Turkish minister discussed with his Moroccan counterpart means to strengthen cooperation at bilateral and multilateral levels.

El Otmani and Davutoglu reiterated their refusal of using force to settle the Syrian crisis, insisting that any military intervention in that country, where the regime continues to repress a popular uprising demanding its departure, could have disastrous consequences on the whole the region.

At the bilateral level, the two ministers agreed on the practical mechanisms likely to double bilateral trade, Turkish investments in Morocco and the number of scholarships granted to Moroccan students in Turkey.

The two countries also agreed to enhance bilateral political consultations.
