New York – Morocco’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Mohamed Loulichki, voiced Morocco’s regret regarding the failure of the Security Council to adopt strong resolution on Syria following the double veto by Russia and China.
“We can only express our deep regret and disappointment with this decision,” Said Loulichki during a Security Council meeting on Syria, adding that this veto only worsens the hardship of the Syrian people.
Russia and China vetoed for the third time a western-backed draft resolution containing threats of sanctions if the Syrian regime if
Syrian authorities did not stop using heavy weapons and withdraw troops from towns and cities within 10 days.
The vetoed draft resolution also extends for 45 days the UN observers mission in Syria.
Loulichki told the Press that in the absence of a unity and consensus within the Security Council no headway will be made in the ground.
The Moroccan official also voiced hope that the incapacity of the Security Council to adopt a resolution would not lead to the deterioration of the situation.
He said Morocco voted for the resolution out of its approbation of the statement of Geneva on the set guidelines and principles for a Syrian-led peaceful political transition.
Morocco’s position is also part of its support to the Arab League’s decisions.
