VLISSINGEN, Netherlands, March 14 (UPI) — Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding of the Netherlands has delivered a new Sigma class frigate to the Moroccan navy.

The Sigma class Sultan Moulay Ismail is the second of three frigates ordered by the North African nation.

DSNS said the modular vessel was delivered on schedule following sea trails and custom outfitting and that work on the final vessel is under way.

The ship is 297.6 feet long, 42.7 feet in the bean. Its cruising speed is 18 knots, at which its range is more than 4,100 miles.

Morocco contracted DSNS for the vessels four years ago and the first frigate, the Tarik Ben Zayid, was commissioned last September.

DSNS said that after the commissioning of the new vessel, its Moroccan crew will continue with another three weeks of Sail Safety Training in Den Helder and North Sea.

The training will be conducted by personnel from the Royal Netherlands Navy.
