New york (UN) – Morocco is willing to support “any specific action” by the UN Security Council to face the terrorist risk in the Sahel region, Morocco’s deputy permanent representative to the UN Lotfi Bouchaara said on Thursday in New York.
A special attention should be paid to this region which recently witnessed an increase “in the frequency and degree of terrorist acts,” he said at a meeting of the 15 member states to assess progress made by the UN body’s three counterterrorism committees.
They are the Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee, the counter-terrorism committee and the committee on the proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.
“Considering the concerns voiced by the Council member states during its high-level meeting on May 4 and given the Sahel region’s alarming situation, we deem that the three committee should take a special interest in this area which witnessed an increase in the frequency and degree of terrorist acts by groups in zones of political unrest and economic turmoil,” he said.
“The counter-terrorism committee has, for over a decade, been an indispensible mechanism serving our joint action against terrorism,” he noted, underling that the adaptation of the said committee’s mandate enabled to put emphasis on other areas of activities which require more attention and actions.
