(AFP) RABAT — Morocco’s Prince Moulay Hicham, King Mohammed VI’s first cousin, has dropped a lawsuit against an MP whom he was suing for defamation after the defendant apologised, his lawyer told AFP on Monday.
The prince launched proceedings against Abdelhadi Khairat, an MP for the USFP leftwing opposition party, after media reports in August that he had accused the prince of exploiting his privileges, including receiving a bank loan without collateral.
Khairate wrote to the prince apologising for his comments, which he said were “unfounded,” according to his lawyer Abderrahim Berrada.
The prince then agreed to “withdraw the complaint.”
Prince Moulay Hicham, an academic at Stanford University in the United States, who is known as the “rebel prince” for his outspoken criticism of Morocco’s political system, appeared in court when the trial opened last month.
It was the first court appearance by a member of the Moroccan royal family.
