Tunisia’s new constitution ‘not ready’ before February

RABAT, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) — Morocco welcomes the adoption of the new Tunisian constitution, describing it as a crucial step in the democratic transition process for the North African country, the Moroccan Foreign Affairs ministry said Tuesday in a statement.

“Morocco commends the spirit of understanding and consensus which have marked this democratic process and hails all Tunisian political (groups) for their constructive patriotism and serious and continued efforts to go through this delicate historical phase, ” added the statement posted on the ministry’s website, reiterating the country’s full support for Tunisia’s development and prosperity.

Tunisia’s National Constituent Assembly (parliament) approved the country’s new constitution after members of the legislative body voted overwhelmingly for the charter on Sunday night. The long-delayed constitution took more than two years to complete and was officially adopted three years after uprising that toppled former President Zine Abidine Ben Ali.
