Morocco hosts evaluation meting for TICAD IV
Tokyo International Conference on Africa’s Development – The 4th evaluation meeting of the Tokyo International Conference on Africa’s Development (TICAD IV) opened in Marrakech, Southern Morocco, Saturday with representatives from 51 African countries and regional and international organizations, as well as the private sector and the civil society, participating.
Co-chaired by the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Saad Dine El Otmani, and his Japanese counterpart, Koichiro Gemba, the meeting, which is held midway between TICAD IV and TICAD V, will be devoted to the evaluation of the implementation of the 2008 Yokohama action plan, the Moroccan news agency reports.
The examination of Africa’s economic growth and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), debates on post-MDGs (2015), the consolidation of peace and good governance and climate change are also part of the agenda of the two-day meeting.
Organized by the Japanese government, the office of the UN special adviser for Africa, UNDP and the World Bank, the meeting will also provide an opportunity to look into the efforts made particularly in the areas of economic growth, the strengthening of capacities for African countries to face the challenges of climate change and the consolidation of peace and good governance.
TICAD was initiated by the Japanese government in 1993, and is aimed at promoting high-level political dialogue between Japanese and African leaders, as well as the mobilization of support for development initiatives outlined by Africans themselves.
