MOROCCO, GROWING INTEREST IN ORGANIC FARMING
Moroccans’ appreciation for organic products is increasing, but consumers’ suspicion about the use of the word organic on labels is a brake on the development of the industry – the Moroccan news agency MAP reports.

“There is a need to establish a national law, standardized with the European and American ones”, argues Givernaud Thierry – representative of QC & I, German office for certification of organic products. “The aim is to protect the terms “bio” and “organic” and facilitate the market development both domestically and abroad. Also, to minimize the costs related to certification abroad”. According to Thierry, “organic farming is a real opportunity for Morocco, considering that organic products will be favored in consumption over the next 20 years”.
As reported by ANSAmed, the Moroccan government has already committed itself to this sector, by adopting a draft law on organic production of agricultural products and fish. The goal is to encourage and promote organic production and to contribute to sustainable development by improving the earnings of farmers involved in organic production. The project therefore aims to protect the environment and the biodiversity, as well as to meet consumer demand through the quality assurance of organic products by also offering an important opportunity for the development of exports.
