New York (U.N.) – Morocco urged, on Monday in New York, for a “comprehensive, supportive and inclusive” cooperation to tackle the security challenges in the Sahel region.
Morocco’s Ambassador to the UN, Mohamed Loulichki, called for “the development of global, supportive and inclusive cooperation among western and northern African States and the UN system” in order to deal with security challenges in the Sahel.
Loulichki spoke in the UN Security Council on the situation in West Africa and the Sahel-Saharan region.
As for “the security challenges in the region,” the ambassador expressed Morocco’s concern “about the threats to the stability of West African countries by drug trafficking and piracy.”
He noted the need to set up a cross-regional cooperation in particular between the concerned countries.
The permanent representative recalled, in this regard, the initiative launched by the Kingdom to hold the Ministerial Conference of African States Bordering the Atlantic to strengthen cooperation, notably security, between 22 countries.
He, in this context, announced the holding soon in Rabat of a meeting of ministers responsible for the security of African countries bordering the Atlantic.
In this regard, Morocco welcomed the cooperation that is taking shape between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) as part of the fight against piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
During these discussions, Loulichki also called on the United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) to support capacity building in the Mano River Union which is an “appropriate mechanism” to discuss the challenges in the sub-region.
