Morocco on Monday foiled an attempt to smuggle some six tons of cannabis at the Guergarate crossing point on the border with Mauritania.
The banned substance was aboard an international transport truck bound for an African country, according a statement of the Moroccan police.
The drug was carefully concealed in a cargo of vegetables for export, said the statement, adding the truck driver along with two of his couriers were arrested.
The statement said that the security service started a probe to check if a possible national or international criminal network was involved.
Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation during the last decade, Morocco remains one of the world’s largest producers, according to the United Nation’s Office on Drugs and Crime. Enditem
