Morocco’s Ministry of Agriculture has been criticized by a government council for failing to tackle illegal fishing or meet fisheries development targets, reports the Arab Weekly.
In its report on the progress of the ministry’s Alliotis Plan, Morocco’s Supreme Council of Accounts noted the presence of dual reporting of the same product and mixing of authorized products with that caught using illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing methods, as well as illegal fishing of octopus.
The Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture established the Alliotis Plan in 2009, setting out to modernize Moroccan fisheries and aquaculture.
The Ministry of Agriculture has defended the productivity of the fisheries sector and the Alliotis Plan, pointing out the Supreme Council’s report stated that 19 of the 21 planned goals had been implemented.
