Rabat – Morocco and the European Union signed, on Thursday in Rabat, financing agreements of two projects related to the Ouarzazate concentrating solar power plant (30 million euros) and the program of improving drinking water supply performances (7 million euros), a statement by the Economy Ministry said.

The signing ceremony was chaired by Economy Minister Nizar Baraka and European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Stefan Füle.

Baraka said that the first project concerns building a solar-thermal power plant (between 125 and 160 MW) aimed at developing a complex with full capacity to produce solar energy-based electricity (500 MW) by 2020. It will enable Morocco to reduce its energy dependency, reinforce its energy production capacity and slash greenhouse gas emissions.

The drinking water supply program is aimed at reducing health hazards caused by consuming unclean water and secure a sufficient and efficient supply of water, he noted.
