Morocco Breaks Up Terrorist Cell
RABAT, June 26 (BERNAMA-NNN-MAP) — The Moroccan authorities have broken up a terrorist cell in the northeast city of Fez which was brainwashing and recruiting Moroccan volunteers to fight in Syria and Iraqw, the Interior Ministry says.
The Moroccan security forces said members of the ring, with the help of heads of terrorist organisations in Morocco and Syria, had been hiring and sending several Moroccan volunteers to the two Arab countries to undergo military training and learn how to handle weapons and make explosives, pending their enrollment to carry out suicide attacks in Iraq and Syria.
The Interior Ministry said here Wednesday that the monitoring of activities of Moroccan combatants who took part in various armed operations with other Al Qaeda-affiliated groups has helped to reveal that these combatants were determined to return to Morocco to conduct destabilisation operations and jeopardise the kingdom’s stability by carrying out terrorist operations.
The cell members, including a man who had been previously been prosecuted under the kingdom’s anti-terrorism law, had raised funds and carried out smuggling in order to finance the travel of volunteers to Syria.
The defendants will stand trial after the ongoing investigation is over, the ministry said, without stating the number of those arrested.
