Rabat – Morocco’s security services have broken up a three-member terrorist cell called “Escadron Al Battar”, the Interior Ministry reported on Friday in a statement.
The statement added that among the members of the dismantle cell is an ex-convict under the anti-terror law, and that it was led by one of the most active individuals on jihadist websites, linked to Al Qaida.
It said this individual forged close ties with leaders of terrorist organisations in Yemen, Afghanistan, Somalia, Libya, Iraq and other regions.
The members of the cell planned to join the camps of al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) outside Morocco to receive military training before returning to the Kingdom to carry out terrorist acts against security services’ headquarters and western interests. To this end, they planned to kill security members to get their arms in order to use them in sabotage acts, according to the statement.
They were also in permanent contacts with AQIM to provide them with weapons needed to carry out their criminal project in Morocco and coordinate their operations in accordance with the goals of this terrorist organization in Morocco.
The accused will be brought to justice flowing investigations under way, it said.
