New York – Morocco fully backs the setting up of a regional platform for cooperation in the Sahel region, Morocco’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Mohamed Loulichki said on Friday.

The Moroccan diplomat made the statement while speaking at a Security Council meeting on peace and security in Africa during which a UN report on security in the region following the Libyan crisis was presented.

“Morocco supports the recommendations of the report to develop an integrated strategy that concretely addresses the global security and humanitarian challenges facing development in the Sahel at the medium and long terms,” underscored Loulichki.

This mechanism of cooperation will have a trans-regional dimension impacting the whole countries in the Maghreb and the Sahel as well as other countries in western and central Africa, he said, stressing the need for the UN and international partners’ support.

Morocco, as a country belonging to the Maghreb and the Sahelo-Saharan region, is directly concerned with the threats emanating from the Sahel, Loulichki added.

Morocco, he said, closely follows the development of the situation in this part of Africa.

Loulichki also voiced concern over the surge of threats to security in the region.
