Rabat – Foreign Minister Saad Dine El Otmani stressed, on Monday in Rabat, the need to reinvigorate the Community of Sahel and Saharan States (CEN-SAD) through its founding treaty with a view to boosting the organisation’s role in Africa’s sustainable development.

The review of the treaty will enable CEN-SAD to address the threats to peace and stability in the region, said EL Otmani during a joint press conference with his Chadian peer Idriss Deby Itno, whose country assumes the organisation’s presidency.

El Otmani reiterated Morocco’s support for the efforts undertaken by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to resolve the crisis in Mali.

The Moroccan official, who was speaking at the end of the extraordinary meeting of CEN-SAD’s executive council, said that under the new constitution, Morocco’s diplomacy will endeavour to reinforce cooperation and solidarity ties with African countries.

The draft revised treaty of CEN-SAD will be submitted for final approval to the extraordinary session of the head of states and governments conference that will take place in Ndjamena, Chadian foreign minister said.
