Pyramid Research expects Morocco’s telecommunications market to contract at a CAGR of -1.2%, going from an estimated $4.5bn in 2012 to $4.2bn by 2017. The mobile segment, which made up 67.2% of total revenue in 2011, is expected to remain the largest revenue-generating segment in Morocco through the end of the forecast period. This strength will be due partially to mobile broadband uptake (especially with the planned arrival of 4G technology) and increased competition among the three mobile providers. While anticipated to experience a slow decline through 2017, fixed voice continues to be an important contributor to the industry’s revenue, accounting for 23.9% of total revenue in 2011. Despite the fact that fixed VoIP revenue is miniscule in comparison to other market segments, the projected CAGR between 2012 and 2017 is a promising 26.7%. The popularity of services such as Skype among Moroccans will bolster the growth in this area. Fixed data revenue in Morocco is paltry when compared with other AME markets, and we project that this segment will account for just $140m of total telecom revenue in 2012. Businesses appear to be the biggest users of fixed data services, but we expect that the introduction of undersea cables and FTTH will fuel increased access to fixed data services by household consumers.
