RABAT (Reuters) – Morocco’s King Mohammed won a landslide victory in a referendum on Friday over constitutional reforms he proposed in a bid to placate “Arab Spring” street protesters, according to preliminary results.
Interior Minister Taib Cherkaoui said 98.5 percent of voters had backed the new constitution, according to a count of votes from 94 percent of polling booths. The charter explicitly grants executive powers to the government but retains the king at the helm of the cabinet, army, religious authorities and judiciary.
