Two sisters from Tetouan in northern Morocco dream of becoming the country’s first women car mechanics when they qualify and open a repair workshop of their own.
Rajae and Najlae Lachqa, 22 and 23, the only women in their class, will call their outfit ‘Princess cars’.
“I have always been passionate about cars and I have dragged my sister along too,” Najlae said. Should they succeed in their endeavour, they might make it easier for Moroccan women to get their cars repaired – something that is currently considered a taboo. The women, two of 11 siblings, are being sponsored in their training under the ‘Let Girls Learn’ programme of US development agency USAID. There are approximately 10 million young people in Morocco and they make up 80% of unemployed. “I want to be a mechanic to show that girls and women can work in every field,” Najlae said. (ANSAmed)
