Morocco needs to take advantage of its 3,500 kilometers of marine coast to create a “real aquaculture industry”, said the country’s secretary of fisheries, Mbarka Bouaida, Morocco World News reported.

Although the aquaculture industry is a new domain for Morocco, the country will succeed in this plan by exploiting the assets it already has, according to Bouaida.

Morocco’s vision for this field is “to make it an indisputable growth engine that can forge a true blue economy”, it was said in a speech read in Bouaida’s name by Majida Maarouf, the director of the Morocco’s National Agency for the Development of Aquaculture, at the 15th Europe-North Africa Convention in Bordeaux, France.

Morocco is the 17th largest producer of fish in the world, with production of approximately 1.5 million metric tons, worth more than $1 billion.
