Moroccan gold mining company Managem will double its gold production from 50 to 100 kg per month in Jan. 2013, the Gabonese presidency said in a statement.

Managem, Morocco’s largest private mining group, operates the gold mine in Bakoudou, located over 650 km southeast of Gabon’s capital, Libreville.

The gold mine in Bakoudou was discovered in 1940 by the French Bureau of Geological and Mining Research (BRGM) and was initially exploited in the early 1980s by the Mining Company of Ogooué (COMILOG), a subsidiary of French group Eramet.

Reserves at the Badoukou’s deposit are estimated at 1.7 million tonnes, according to the Gabonese Ministry of Mines.
