Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said a Moroccan company, YNNA Holdings, had expressed today, its keenness to assemble and distribute Proton cars in that country.
He said YNNA Holdings is among the biggest companies in Moroco with a varied business network, including those in the hotel, construction and supermarket sectors.
“They have expressed an interest and have seen the Proton management which welcomes their proposal. Of course, this remains to be verified by the new Proton owners.
“At the moment, the new owners have not yet taken over Proton, so, no major decision can be made. But I am quite sure the new owners would welcome this opportunity to assemble the car in Morocco,” he added.
Dr Mahathir said this after receiving a courtesy call from YNNA Holdings’ vice president, Omar Chaabi, at the Perdana Leadership Foundation here.
Asked to comment on the potential of YNNA’s interest, he said it was good, as Morocco has signed Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with a number of Arab countries.
Meanwhile, the President of the Konsortium Usahawan Makanan dan Industri Asas Tani Sdn Bhd (KOMITA), Sheikh Ahmad Dusuki when contacted by Bernama said YNNA Holdings, had also stated its interest in establishing the first Islamic bank in Morocco by taking expertise from Malaysia to that country.
