New York (U.N.) – French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe reiterated, on Monday in New York, the “support” of France to the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara which he described as “realistic basis for a solution” to this issue.

“For France, the autonomy plan put forward by Morocco is the basis of a realistic solution to the Sahara issue,” said the minister during a press conference on the sidelines of a debate in the U.N. Security Council on “the challenges and opportunities presented by the changes in the Arab world with respect to international peace and security.”

Morocco has “made undeniable efforts by setting up an independent human rights monitoring system” under the UN “special procedures,” the minister said as a ninth round of informal negotiations on the Sahara is taking place in Manhasset.

“I think we should move in this direction and we support this proposal of Morocco,” stressed the minister.
