Barcelona – Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Garcia Margallo hailed, Wednesday, the role of the monarchy as a “factor of political and religious stability” for the Kingdom of Morocco.
Morocco, which “has embarked on the path of reform, is currently consolidating its democratic process by adopting a new constitution,” Margallo added in a conference on “the foreign policy of Spain in the Mediterranean”, organized at the headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) in Barcelona.
On the political changes in the countries of the southern shore of the Mediterranean, the Spanish official stressed the need for the European Union to support democratic transitions under way in those countries through the launch of economic initiatives to promote growth and employment in the region.
“There is a complementarity between democratic transition and economic growth,” he said, calling, in this respect, on the EU to support regimes and political forces adopting an “inclusive” approach in order to promote democracy in south Mediterranean countries.
The Spanish minister also emphasized the seriousness of the situation in the Sahel which, he said, is seeing a proliferation of terrorist groups.
