EU High Representative Federica Mogherini Saturday said that the EU is discussing several options, including security measures, to support a national unity government in Libya should this come out of the talks currently taking place in Rabat, Morocco.

“The EU has a presence in the Mediterranean Sea already through Frontex in conjunction with the Italian naval force that is linked to the control of the borders and also the rescue of migrants and asylum seekers who risk their lives at sea,” she told a news conference at the end of a two-day informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Riga, Lativa.

She added this is not to be linked to any sort of naval blockade to Libya but we discussed different options, also security measures of new Libya.

“This can also mean some naval presence, but we are at early stage to get into details. We are discussing that in the UN and hope to discuss with Libyan authorities, “she added.

Mogherini noted that today they started the meeting with the Foreign Ministers of the EU candidate countries.
“We discussed with them the common foreign policy and regional challenges as well as the opportunities we have, following up on our discussions yesterday on Libya and on Ukraine,” she said.

“We discussed also the situation in their region, in the Western Balkans, around Turkey, and we touched on the enlargement process a little bit,” she added. (end) nk.hm
