Migrants fleeing Syria and Africa risk injury to enter Melilla, the gateway to Europe – in pictures

The border between Morocco and the Spanish exclave of Melilla has become a focal point for immigration from Syria and sub-Saharan Africa. Melilla is one of only two land borders the EU shares with Africa, and thousands of migrants attempt the perilous journey each year. In November, Spain reinstated a 12km-long fence to deter illegal incomers, a move condemned by human rights groups. The barbed-wire barrier was first introduced in 2005 but had been partially removed after causing serious injuries.
