An international conference on Syria would likely to take place in Morocco, an Arab League official told Hürriyet Daily News yesterday.

The meeting could be held next week, since an urgent action is needed on increasing bloody assault in Syria, he added. Moroccan Foreign Minister Saadeddin el-Othmani said Morocco is a candidate to host the meeting. Non-permanent Arab member of U.N. Security Council Morocco sponsored the resolution calling for al-Assad to step down thatRussia and China vetoed. Russia and China will be invited to the international conference, despite low possibility for their attendance.

“Nothing is fixed,” el-Othmani said, adding that he expected more clarity on the matter after Sunday’s Arab League meeting. The Arab League, expected to meet in Cairo on Feb. 12, may call on international actors for the conference, the official said. The conference would better take place under the leadership of Arab League, Ömer Çelik, deputy chairman of Justice and Development Party (AKP) said in a televised interview yesterday. Russia and China last week vetoed a Security Council resolution, proposed by Arab and European nations, which aimed to back an Arab League plan for Syria.
