Mega Construction Projects in Morocco

According to the BNC Network, there are over 200 active mega construction projects in Morocco with a combined estimated value of just under $50bn.

The North African country is experiencing sharp growth on the back of government investments that seek to meet the needs of a rising population, according to the “Morocco Construction Market Outlook” report.

We look at some of the top mega construction projects in Morocco:

1. Sustainable City:

The project involves the construction of a mixed-use sustainable city, spread over an area of 2.3 square kilometers. It will comprise 400 villas, a hospital, a 2,000-student medical university, a research center, and a golf course.

2. Mahdiyya Renewable Energy City

The project involves the construction of a renewable energy city, which will use sun, wind, and hydro-power to meet its energy requirements, spread over 72,339 square kilometers, as well as 8 kilometers of beachfront. It will feature a state-of-the-art teaching hospital, a golf course, a shopping mall, tourist facilities and a two-mile Corniche lined with shops and restaurants. It will have the capacity to accommodate 2,000 people.

3. Rabat Bouregreg Tower

It involved the construction of a 55-storey tower incorporating ecological and sustainable design concepts. As well as having a number of luxury apartments, the tower will host hotels and office space, while the lower structure will include prominent public spaces for the arts and culture.

On completion, the tower will be the centrepiece of a wider project, to develop the Bouregreg valley in Rabat, which is in itself part of the 2014-2018 Integrated Development Program dubbed ‘Rabat, City of Light, Moroccan Cultural Capital.’

4. Hyatt Regency – Taghazout Bay

The project involves the construction of a 5-star property, the Hyatt Regency hotel, at the new Taghazout Bay, which is just 17 kilometers away from Agadir. Upon completion, the hotel will offer 160 rooms. In addition to that, the hotel will feature restaurants, a lobby lounge, a Regency Club lounge, meeting and event space, including a ballroom and boardroom, as well as a spa and fitness center.

5. Marriott Hotel – Tamuda Bay

The project involves the construction of a 5-star hotel under the JW Marriott brand alongside the renowned Marina Smir in Tetouan, Morocco. The development is spread over an area of 22,500 square meters and comprises of 194 guestrooms including VIP suites, a spa, and three restaurants.

The hotel is strategically located just 16.1-kilometer from the straits of Gibraltar, Marina Smir, which is Morocco’s first yacht harbor and rapidly becoming the port of choice for those traveling along the waters of the Southern Mediterranean.
