This is the best time of year to opt for one of Marrakech’s budget riads.

While nights are cold, daytime temperatures should be considerably higher than in the UK – perfect for a breakfast in a sunny courtyard or dinner on a roof terrace.

Spend what you’ve saved in the souks and head home with some stunning Christmas presents.

Angsana Riads

This good value option is an award-winning collection of six luxury riads in the centre of Marrakech’s ancient medina. Each one has been restored by a local artisan, showcasing Moroccan ceramic art tiles, plaster motifs and hand-woven carpets. Unusually for a riad, there are two restaurants between them, including one that serves Thai dishes as well as Moroccan – and you can enjoy this wonderful food by candlelight on one of the roof terraces. Staff are on hand to offer advice, arrange excursions and recommend restaurants and cafés around the city.

Two-night packages from £376pp including flights, transfers and B&B.

Riad Zam Zam

For a touch of luxury head for this 15-room riad. A large fireplace means that you’ll be cosy on even the coldest night while you can make the most of the winter sun on the roof terrace after a relaxing session in the hamman or heated pool.

Three nights with flights from £662pp.

Riad Al-Jazira

Three townhouses have been combined to make this spacious but cosy 15-room riad. Simply but beautifully decorated with gorgeous high-ceilinged rooms and a colonnaded pool, it’s an oasis of calm in the frenetic heart of the old medina.

Double rooms start at £69 including breakfast.

Riad Africa

You’ll get a personal shopper for the day to help navigate your way around the souks for some superb shopping. The riad has just eight rooms and a roof terrace overlooking the bustling Djemaa el-Fna square.

Three nights’ B&B from £299, with flights, shopper and massage.
