Morocco’s leading telecom operator over the weekend reached a tentative deal with two trade unions involved with Maroc Telecom employees to avoid a scheduled three-day strike that was to begin on Monday. The former monopoly in the country has been under threat of mass action after workers demanded higher wages.

Maroc Telecom, France’s Vivendi’s second-most profitable affiliate, announced over the weekend that a strike had been avoided after it reached an agreement with leaders from the Democratic Labor Confederation (CDT) and the Democratic Labor Federation (FDT).
“The agreement covers stopping social protests and commits parties to engage in a reflection on career development, implementation of new disciplinary rules and improvement in wages,” it said in a statement.
However, it did not provide details on what exactly was agreed and despite the three-day strike being called off, it is unclear what the future for the employees will bring.
In addition to higher wages, the four unions want the firm to introduce bonuses that reflect increases in profitability and ensure fairness in staff promotion.
Workers for Maroc Telecom have been complaining about their wages for months and the protest was aimed at forcing company officials to take their demands seriously.
