Staff reports
Over the holidays, Marblehead Rotary Club member Tanya S. DeGenova, who grew up in Casablanca, travelled to southwestern Morocco to assist the local Rotary Club in distributing food, warm clothing, blankets and backpacks filled with school supplies to villagers in Ahl Tifnoute (Taroudant Province) and Assaka Riad Imsouane (Agadir Coastal Region) and brought contributions to the Agadir Club from fellow Marblehead Rotary Club members towards this social action.
During her visit to the region, DeGenova also assisted in the conduct of medical screening of the Berber ladies for high blood pressure and diabetes, and helped with a dental-hygiene demonstration for preschoolers, performed by some 30 Volunteer Morocco pre-med students from the Boston area and from the Agadir Interact and Rotoract clubs.
Volunteer Morocco (volunteermorocco.org) is a non-profit organization founded by Professor Aziz El Madi of Salem State University. As a U.S. citizen from Agadir, Dr. El Madi has been organizing such two-week trips to Agadir for Boston-based high school and college students twice per year since the spring of 2007 to bring sustainable development to his native region.
The Rotary Club of Marblehead meets Thursdays at 12:15 at the Boston Yacht Club. For more information about the club or membership, e-mail the club’s secretary at jlivingston@marblebank.com or visitmarbleheadrotary.com.
