The students set off in the early hours of yesterday morning for the two-week expedition.

Accompanied by three adult leaders the children from years 10 and 11 will be helping a community in a small Moroccan village.

The group will be digging irrigation ditches to increase farming opportunities, painting school buildings and teaching English to people in the village.

The team will also tackle the trek up the highest mountain in North Africa, Mount Toubkal, which stands at over 13,000ft.

One of the students Jasmine Aldred said: “It will be an amazing experience for all involved and hopefully future St Bernard’s students will also get this opportunity to go and explore the world and help people less fortunate than themselves.”

Jasmine thanked the businesses which had supported the team and helped fund the trip, including a grant from the Sir John Fisher Foundation, a charity that helps organisations in the Barrow area.

Support came from local and national businesses including: Kutz, Ian Ward Carpets, Microsolutions, Thorntons, Debenhams, The Body Shop, Conlons Opticians, Savers, DW Sports, Sally Hair and Beauty, John Wren Motorcycle Services, Wildfox, Des Johnson Recruitment, Designa Frames, Review Hairdressers, Marks & Spencer, Poundland, Heaths/Toymaster, Snaps, Mcdonalds, Boots, Kate’s Skates, Riggs Dentist, Arsenal FC and Asda.

The participants have also been fundraising for the trip themselves for the past year since signing up to the project in 2011.

They organised various events including a race night, cake sales, a fun day and concerts.

Jasmine will be joined by fellow students: Emily Leeder, Morgan Wood, Joe Hebden, Sean Noblet, Philip McArthur, Joshua Jones, Elliot Lashmar-Bolton, Bethan Doherty, Charlotte Hill, Alex Sansom, Jacob Spurling and Josef WrightWebb.
