Strasbourg – The Council of Europe hailed the reform process undertaken in Morocco, under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, mainly in relation with local democracy, on the occasion of the 23rd session of its Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, currently convening in Strasbourg.

The Congress, which brings together 300 local and regional representatives from the 47 Council of Europe member states on the theme “the challenges currently facing local democracy”, lauded, in a resolution on changes under way in Arab countries, the revision of the Moroccan constitution and the organic draft law which will lead to a new territorial organization.

It reiterated its readiness to support the holding and supervision of local and regional elections following the adoption of the said law.

In another resolution on “the policy of the Council of Europe towards neighboring regions: the role of Congress”, the European elected members reaffirmed their support for the Council’s decision to strengthen ties with states south of the Mediterranean, including Morocco, as part of its efforts to promote the values of democracy, the primacy of law and the respect of human rights.
