Washington – The Washington-based Leadership Council for Human Rights (LCHR) applauded, on Thursday, the atmosphere of calmness and transparency with which Morocco is preparing for the elections of 2011, saying that the Kingdom evidences once again commitment to meet the aspirations of the Moroccan people.

“Based on the pre-election assessments reported by several international independent observers, Morocco once again confirms its commitment to the promotion of good governance in the management of public affairs in response to the aspiration of the Moroccan people,” the LCHR underscored in a statement.

The LCHR congratulated Morocco for “the progress and speed with which a large body of laws governing campaign and election procedures was also quickly enacted for the success of the early elections.”

The US human rights NGO, presided by Kathryn Cameron Porter, welcomed the increased youthful candidates and doubling of women seats from 30 in 2007 to 60.

The LCHR recalled that a recent pre-election assessment report of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) highlighted the “the openness and sincerity of all parties involved in the assessment.”

The same source also added that the NDI noted that “despite the shortened timeframe, the current electoral is marked by a number of positive factors.”

The statement quoted the NDI report as describing the legislative elections as “a logical continuity of a referendum that was held in July 2011.”

“Morocco is therefore in a transitional stage that will hopefully lead to a full implementation of the New Constitution,” the LCHR said, adding that the Kingdom is setting once again a “shining example” on how peaceful and progressive reform can benefit the peoples of the region.
