GIBRALTAR
Exercise Jebel Sahara 2012 has now been running for the last three weeks, and has proven to really test and demonstrate how the Royal Gibraltar Regiment reacts in an expeditionary exercise overseas. It has been 12 years since the RG first went to train in Marrakesh and it is still considered an important joint-exercise platform for the regiment and the Moroccan Armed Forces.
“The realistic condition that the terrain offers sets the tempo for operations in a contemporary environment, making the exercise invaluable. The RG troops have been very busy,” comments Maj Juri Williamson, Officer Commanding Exercise Jebel Sahara.
“It has really tested all departments within the RG, from the logistical support to the training staff who have planned and executed the exercise phases.”
Unlike other years, the RG have had to set up a fully functioning operational camp in Sidi Bou Othmane training area, which is 15Km Northeast of Marrakesh.
“Training has been hard but fantastic” mentions Capt John Pitto, Sahara Company second-in-command.
“Conditions have been tough to date but the troops continue to excel in their training”.
The RG will be returning back to Gibraltar towards the end of the month.
