Yazaki Corporation, an automotive parts supplier, plans to open a new plant in Kenitra, Morocco, in January 2020.
The facility plans a workforce of around 2,500 people and will manufacture products for, among others, Renault and PSA, both French car makers, also with local facilities.
The move is another success for Morocco’s industrial policy of a free zone linked with Tanger Med port.
Tanger Automotive City platform offers the status of a free zone to companies involved in industrial, logistics or tertiary activities. Linked to the development of the automotive industry in Morocco, this zone is located close to the Renault Tanger Med plant (less than 2 km). Tanger Automotive City has direct access to Tanger Med Port (22 km) and the Tanger Free Zone (20 km). The platform is also connected to a 1,800 km-motorway network and a 2,000 km-railway network.
Tanger Med is a global logistics gateway located on the Strait of Gibraltar and connected to 186 ports worldwide with handling capacities of 9 million containers, exports of 1 million new vehicles, transit of 7 million passengers and 700,000 trucks on an annual basis. Tanger Med constitutes an industrial hub for more than 900 companies representing a yearly export turnover in excess of $8.3 billion in various sectors such as automotive, aeronautics, logistics, textile and trade.
In June this year, APM Terminals inaugurated its second terminal in Morocco – MedPort Tangier. Part of the Tanger Med Port complex, it has an annual capacity of 5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalents).
With this new capacity, Morocco is establishing itself as one of the most important transshipment locations in the world. Tanger Med Port is already ranked as the leading African port and is amongst the world’s top 50 container ports due to its prime location along key trade lanes and increasing cargo flows, to and from Africa.
