Italy and Spain are buying olive oil from Tunisia and Morocco

In the first three months of the new crop year – October-December 2012 – a 65,8% increase was observed in extra EU imports compared with the same period a season earlie by R. T. In the 2011/12 crop year, intra EU deliveries of olive oil came to 988.799 tonns while extra EU exports came to 624.074 tonns, making a total of 1.612.874 tonns. In the same season, exports and deliveries by Spain totalled 956.407 tonns, representing 59,3% of the EU total. Specifically, 70% of Spain’s aggregate tonnage was made up of deliverries to other EU countries. By order of importance the mail countires of destination were Italy, Portugal, Unitesd States, France, United Kingdom, China, Australia, Japan, Brazzil and Russia. With a combined tonnage of 411.713 tonns for its extra EU exports and intra EU deliveries, Italy accounted for 25.5% of the total for EU. The other way rounf Spain, 62% of this aggregate was made up of exports to countries outside EU and 37% to other EU members. The chief recipients were United States, Germany, France, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, China, Spain, Belgium and Switzerland. Greece recorded total combination exports and deliveries of 104.319, 83% of which went to countires inside the EU. The main destination, ranked by volume, were Italy, Germany, United States, Canada, China, Spain, Australia, Russima Bulgaria and United Kingdom. Italy dominates olive oil acquisitions inside the EU, buying 489.838 tonns, from Spain (404.818) and Greece (69.599). France is the nex, 11,721 tonns, and Portugal is in third position, 99.583 tonns. Tunisia and Morocco accounted 91% of this volume. Most of these imports occurred at the outset of the crop year under customs headling 150910 for virgin olive oil. An itemised approach shows that Spain imported 4.709 tonns from Morocco, 90% of Moroccan exports to EU while Italy imported 16.574 tonnes from Tunisia, equating 79% of the total. In contrast intra EU acquisition went down by 7%.
