Morocco on Thursday organized a commemoration ceremony in the capital Rabat for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The ceremony was attended by ministers and representatives of the troika of the Islamic Summit, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and The Gambia, and the ministerial troika, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates and Niger, as well as the OIC’s secretary general.
“We need to act in good faith to resolve inter-Islamic disputes and adopt measures and mechanisms to shield our organization against the risks of fragmentation and division,” said Moroccan King Mohammed VI in a message to the ceremony.
He underscored the importance of establishing an accurate, objective diagnosis of the situation prevailing in the Islamic world as well as an in-depth and impartial assessment.
“We need to devise and implement appropriate development strategies and programs, making sure national particularities are duly taken into account, and observing the principles of solidarity and cooperation enshrined in our organization’s Charter,” said the Moroccan king.
Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal Bin Farhan Al-Saud said the OIC has set its main objectives in the service of joint action by the member states and the coordination of its efforts to safeguard the Islamic holy sites.
The organization’s mission is to support the fight of the Palestinian people to recover their rights, to combat racial discrimination and to promote international peace and security on the basis of the values of law and justice, he added.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu called for Islamic countries to overcome disputes so that the Islamic world can work better together.
“Reform of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation is necessary and we must all work to achieve this,” he said.
The OIC was founded in Rabat on Sept. 25, 1969, a month after an attack on Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque.
