Interpol has deployed officers in Morocco to assist local authorities in screening travelers and detecting potential terrorists during the summer tourism season, local media reported on Wednesday.
According to the daily L’Economiste, this operation, code named Neptune, addresses the threats from the travel of foreign terrorist fighters using Mediterranean maritime routes between North Africa and Southern Europe, as well as from people, drugs or firearms traffickers.
In addition to Morocco, Algeria, France, Italy, Spain and Tunisia also took part in the Interpol’s operation, the same source noted.
In the first week of Operation Neptune, more than 350,000 searches of Interpol databases resulted in the detection of four suspected foreign terrorist fighters and the location of a missing person, it pointed out.
Morocco plays a pivotal role in combating terrorism in the Mediterranean region and it works closely with U.S. and European security services.
