A Spanish official says 450 sub-Saharan migrants have stormed a six-meter (20-foot) barbed-wire fence to try to enter the Spanish enclave city of Melilla from Morocco this week.

Melilla Interior Ministry spokeswoman Irene Flores said Wednesday 300 migrants charged the fence Tuesday afternoon. Some 100 got through but were later found by police and placed in temporary accommodation centres.

Flores said another 50 migrants tried to climb the fence overnight but were stopped by Moroccan police. Monday saw 100 migrants trying the feat, with some 20 succeeding.

Melilla is one of two Spanish enclaves on the northwest African coast that are surrounded by Morocco on one side and the Mediterranean Sea on the other.

Migrants seeking access to Europe camp around Melilla hoping for a chance to cross the fence.
