HRH Princess Lalla Meryem inaugurates photo exhibition on RabatRabat – HRH Princess Lalla Meryem inaugurated, here on Friday, a photo exhibition entitled “Rabat d’Autrefois, d’aujourd’hui et de demain” (Rabat in the past, today and tomorrow), which kicks off the festivities celebrating the inclusion of Rabat as a World Heritage.
The exhibition is run at the Mohammed V Avenue until the end of this year. It illustrates five major themes: the Heritage monuments of Rabat, Rabat in the past, Rabat today, Rabat tomorrow, and Rabat environment.
The exhibition starts a rich programme of festivities that features music concerts, plays, children shows, presentation of books on the capital, arts exhibitions in Bab Rouah and Bab el Kebir (Oudayas), as well as guided tours of museums and historical sites for school children and social centre residents.
Last June 29, Rabat was granted, by unanimity of the jury in St Petersburg, the World Heritage status. The key sites taken into consideration were the medina, the 20th century architecture, the neighbourhoods of Habous, Diour Jamaa, the botanical garden and downtown.
The inclusion of Rabat as a world heritage under the topic “Rabat, modern capital and historical city: a shared heritage” is a great event for Rabat and Morocco in general. It reflects the exceptional dimension of the heritage of the city and its valuable position.
The inauguration ceremony took place in presence of Moroccan and UNESCO officials, including Zohour Alaoui, Morocco’s UNESCO delegate ambassador, Naima Sedrati, Chief of Arab states section at the UNESCO, and Eric Falt, Assistant Director-General for the sector for external relations and cooperation, and Philippe Quean UNESCO’s Rabat representative.
