Washington, Oct 11, 2011 – HM King Mohammed VI introduced a sustainable path toward “a mature democracy” through a new constitution which gives the parliament the same powers as the representative assemblies of the great democracies, wrote on Tuesday the Hudson Institute, a US think thank that specializes in International relations, global security and economics.

“The new constitution has transferred the bulk of Moroccan domestic authority to an elected prime minister,” recalled the institute in an article on the latest development in the region signed by Professor Ahmed Charrai, Editor of the French version of Foreign Policy Magazine and member of the board of Trustees of the Foreign Policy Research Institute and the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

The new constitution, which was approved by a landslide majority following a popular referendum, enshrines “the universal values of egalitarianism and liberalism — the very principles which are imperilled elsewhere in the region”, noted Charrai.

“The implementation of these principles will require vigilance on the part of democratic activists in the country,” he said.

In this respect, “Eight political parties, ranging from socialists on the left to an Islamist coalition on the right, share in the responsibility to propel the process forward,” underscored Charrai.
