A Bottesford duo will be running a marathon a day for six days during a 150 mile desert run.

James Noble, 30, and Andrew Robinson, 27, have taken on the gruelling challenge of running the Marathon Des Sables in April 2013 to raise money for Lindsey Lodge hospice and MacMillan Cancer Research.

The race will see the competitors running 150 miles spread over six days across the Sahara Desert in Morocco.

Organisers say the route is across rough, sandy terrain with 20 per cent of the distance over sand dunes.

James, a chiropractor working at The Chirohealth Clinic in Scunthorpe who has run one marathon before and is running the 2012 London marathon, said: “I have been running for a few years and did a marathon in Blackpool which when I finished I said I would never do again, but time is a great healer.

“I wanted to do it because it is the toughest race you can do and if you can complete this then anything is possible.

“I talked about it to Andrew and as he used to be in the Army based out in hot climates, he said he would like to do it.

“The toughest part of my training so far has been the heat acclimatisation.

“Many of my patients have mentioned seeing me on one of my long training runs around Bottesford and Scunthorpe, and their words of encouragement are a great help.

“Temperatures may exceed 50 degrees centigrade in the desert, something that is impossible to recreate in this country.”

Andrew said: “I’m trying to find ways of re-creating training in the heat including running in a heat chamber and running with all my clothes on.

“It is something we both wanted to do to prove to ourselves it can be done.”

All competitors have to carry all their supplies for the race in backpacks including food, clothing camping gear and medical supplies.

James added: “We cannot wait for it, it is not just the event that is hard but the planning that goes into it to get the right equipment.

“The whole process engulfs your life, I find that any spare moment I have I am researching on the internet about equipment or food or reading blogs of people that have completed race.”
