Germany and Morocco will take over the co-chairmanship of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) on January 1 next year.
For the first time since the formation of the GFMD in 2007, a co-chair of two countries will head the forum, a statement issued by German Embassy in Dhaka has said.
The symbolic handover of the chair on Monday during the annual GFMD conference in Dhaka to German State Secretary Markus Ederer and the Moroccan State Secretary Habib Nadir of the Ministry in Charge of Moroccans Living Abroad and Migration Affairs marks the commencement of the co-chairmanship.
In 2017, the motto of the GFMD will be ‘Towards a Global Social Contract on Migration and Development’,
Next year, the focus will be on the contribution of GFMD to the UN ‘Global Compact on Migration’ which is intended to constitute a strong signal of the international community for an enhanced global migration policy and to be adopted by the community of states in 2018.
The balance of interests between migrants and their countries of origin, transit states and destinations will be addressed within the framework of regular and orderly migration, according to a news agency. – bz
