Gerets threatens to dump Morocco
Morocco coach Eric Gerets on Tuesday threatened to abandon the Lions of Atlas after a number of clubs in the domestic league refused to release players called up for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers beginning early next month.
The Belgian had been rumoured as possible successor of Eric Gerets who stepped down as Belgium national coach early this month, but Marc Wilmots has since been named as the Red Devils caretaker.
Morocco will host Senegal friendly in Marrakech on May 25 before facing Gambia and Cote D’Ivoire on June 2 and 9 respectively in the World Cup qualifying.
Gerets unveiled a list of 26 players last week without six top players – Arsenal’s forward Marouane Chamakh, Hadji Youssouf, Taarabt Adel, Carcela Francois, Kantari Ahmed and El Kaddouri Badr.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation is yet to react to the coach’s outcry.
