Members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), led by Saudi Arabia, renewed their support for Morocco and vowed to oppose any attempts that undermine its sovereignty.
The GCC reiterated the commitment made last April during the Morocco-GCC summit to oppose any moves that threaten the kingdom’s sovereignty, in reference to the Western Sahara dispute.
“We express our rejection of any attempt to undermine the supreme interests of Morocco, or its sovereignty,” said Saudi diplomat, Manal Hassan Radwan, speaking on behalf of the GCC before the 4th Commission of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The GCC called for initiatives which help reach a political and consensual settlement on the issue of the Sahara within the framework of relevant Security Council resolutions. It reiterated its support for the mediation efforts conducted by the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Christopher Ross.
In April the GCC backed Morocco’s autonomy plan over the disputed Sahara territory stating that a peaceful and consensual settlement of the prolonged Sahara issue was necessary for the stability and security of the region.
