The PSA Group has officially opened its new Kenitra plant in Morocco, which will “jointly” produce the second-generation Peugeot 208.
The French group says the plant will boast a production capacity of 200 000 units from mid-2020, serving as many as 80 markets. Production will begin with the new Peugeot 208, which the automotive firm says will be “jointly manufactured with the Trnava plant in Slovakia”.
The project was launched back in June 2015 with the signing of an agreement between the PSA Group and Morocco. The company says its new Kenitra plant will enable it to produce models “meeting the expectations of individual buyers and corporate customers in terms of quality and price”.
The PSA Group claims to be the only carmaker to “cover the entire value chain in Africa”, calling on a network of 62 local suppliers (with 27 new supplier sites set up to meet the needs of the Kenitra plant).
“At the heart of the Middle East and Africa region, Morocco is an historic and strategic market for our Group and its four brands, Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel,” said Jean-Christophe Quémard, executive vice-president for the Middle East & Africa, and member of the managing board of the PSA Group.
“We are forging a unique partnership in Morocco’s automotive industry, thanks to the help of all our partners and the support of the Moroccan authorities,” he added.
