French power producer Voltalia was awarded permits to build two hydropower plants in Morocco, the Moroccan financial daily L’Economiste reported Thursday.

Delivered by the Moroccan Ministry for Energy, the permits relate to two hydropower plants of 9.8 MW and 7.2 MW in the Middle-Atlas region.

The permits came after positive technical approvals regarding the connection of the plants to the national grid were given by the National Bureau for Electricity and Drinking Water.

The electricity produced will be sold under long-term power purchase agreements which are still under negotiation.

Morocco is implementing an ambitious strategy to develop its energy sector which will need investments of 40 billion U.S. dollars by 2030, including 30 billion dollars for renewable energy.

The North African kingdom aims to produce 42 percent of its electrical power from renewable energy by 2020 and 52 percent by 2030.
