The French Development Agency (AFD) will extend the Moroccan Electricity and Drinking Water facility (ONEE) a 50-million-euro (56 million U.S. dollars) loan to secure access to drinking water in northern Morocco.

A loan agreement worth 50 million euros and a grant agreement totaling one million euros were signed, on Wednesday in Rabat, by the AFD and the ONEE.

The loan will generalize access to drinking water for the rural and urban inhabitants of Al Hoceima, Driouch, Nador and Taounate provinces, said a statement of the AFD.

The project will improve the quality of the drinking water service, and contribute to reducing inequalities of access to public services while strengthening the resilience of the territory to climate change, added the statement.

This agreement completes the one already signed by the two institutions in December 2018, amounting to 50 million euros, said the statement, adding that the AFD increased its participation in the project’s funding to 101 million euros, out of a total cost estimated at 115 million euros.
