PARIS, April 25 (KUNA) — The French government on Wednesday welcomed the extension of the UN mandate in Western Sahara by a Security Council resolution yesterday.

The French Foreign Ministry said in a statement that efforts must be pursued to find a peaceful solution between Morocco and the Polisario movement which has been fighting for independence for decades.

The French statement noted that the Security Council had sent a “clear message” regarding Moroccan efforts and had also remarked “the considerable progress with confidence-building measures” by Rabat.

The French statement urged all parties to work towards stability in the Maghreb region and took note favourably of Algerian and Moroccan attempts at reconciliation.
